Lately I have been thinking about ascribing to a new way to live my life. I came to a deep reality during my year in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Baptist Hospital that I have been living my life on auto pilot. I have allowed the busyness of life to overwhelm me to the point where I have failed to plan any portion of my life out. To be honest I have always thought of planning as mere busy work. But the reality is the old cliche is true, "failing to plan is really planning to fail." The greatest lesson I have learned this year is highly successful people value intentionality. So I thought I would share this new personal blueprint with the world.
Myself Like most pastors, caregivers, and parents I have repeatedly neglected taking time to recharge and refuel myself. I have constantly cancelled doctors appointments, put off fitness goals, and avoid enjoying hobbies because of other responsibilities pertaining to my church, ministry, or family. My new personal recharging goal is to take a day a month for myself to just CHILL....
My family The failure of so many ministers is in this area. My prayer daily is "God don't let me be a public hero but a private failure at my home." I was not privilege to grow up from childhood with a dad and I never want my children to feel that same pain. So my family goals starting this MONTH is to schedule one day a month for the whole family and then one day for me and my wife.
My ministry I love to preach! I love to listen to good preaching! And many that know me know that I'm a student of highly effective preaching. My prayer has been for years Lord to teach me how to become a good, biblical, and doctrinal preacher. In July I had the opportunity to the attend the EK Bailey International Expository Preaching Conference. After a week of learning, I realized that I had a whole lot of room to improve. Leaving the conference I committed to scheduling and protecting my study time as well as remaining committed to my ultimate education goal of completing my M. Div work.
So as you can see I have become a planner. I even keep a calendar now! WOW! I'll leave you with this scripture, Philippians 1:6 "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
